Today is my mother’s birthday. She is 75. As you may recall from my Mother’s Day tribute, I think quite highly of the gal She is a great mom and friend, lets me win at Gin Rummy, and when I come to visit, she makes sure the fridge and cupboards are stocked with whatever weird food fad item I was into during the last visit, but have since given up. "Oh thanks, mom, but I’m not doing the almond butter and flax seed oil diet any more". She probably spends half of her monthly pension on feeding me during my visits. Then she’ll stand in front of the fridge and list off all the snack foods in the fridge. Because am 45 and incapable of identifying a bowl of grapes or pack of processed cheese slices.
My mother, like most mothers, has had to endure her children, as well as provide for them and care for them. Although my brother and I were generally pretty good kids and didn’t cause trouble, on occasion we did mortify her.
When I was a babe in arms, my mom took my brother and I to Winnipeg on the Selkirk Bus. The bus was packed. My brother, totally impressed with my mother’s natural ability to feed a child gleefully reported to the entire bus in his loud, clear voice:
My mom and dad were active members of The United Church in our town. Selkirk is a fine town, but back then it was not exactly an extravaganza of diversity. There was one black family in our church – they may have been one of the only families of colour in Selkirk. I was 3 years old. Three! I walked up to the male head of that Household of Colour and said:
My mother’s jaw hit the floor (never, ever would my folks have said those words, so she had NO idea where I would have heard this). The man just patted my head.
There is a special place in Hell reserved for my three-year-old self.
When I was, oh, probably six or seven, a friend of my mother’s was telling my mother she was worried about her 18 year old daughter who was going traveling on her own. I was in ear shot, so she said "I’m worried that she’ll get r-a-p-e-d", spelling out the sensitive word. The next time she was over I asked her if her daughter got rapped. I’ve never been a good speller. Or particularily tactful.
My mom was head librarian at the Selkirk Public Library for many years. I used to come in after school and yell, "Where is the Queen of the Library? I want to talk to the Queen of the Library". She thought it was funny. Library patrons, not so much.
When my mom was taking swimming lessons, her teacher told her to demonstrate a dive. After she did, the teacher said, "Ok, Mickey has shown how NOT to do a dive".
Oh I guess that’s not about how my brother or I embarrassed her. She did that one on her own Too bad. Ha ha, Mom.
Some friends had just had a baby. When mom told me about the good news I was more interested in the action that preceeded the glorious birth.
Some facts about my mom:
She is the only person I know who has been known to take 2 hours to eat an entire orange. I would see her when I was a little kid, lying on her tummy in her room, propped up on her elbow reading a book, nibbling away an orange. And then the peel. She did the same thing with apples, but left the seeds and the stems.
She had her tonsils out when she was 10. One grew back.
She injured her pinky finger as a child and ever since it has clicked when she moves it.
She used to paint her fingernails with this vile tasting stuff to break her nailbiting habit. But then she’d just eat through the awful stuff anyway. And she says that yogurt is "tooooo sour".
She can say the word "kitty" 828 times in a minute. It looks like this:
And it sounds something like this, only it goes on way longer:
Her lipstick colour for about 50 years was Revlon "Wine With Everything".
When I was in High School the only boy she ever thought I should date was the most obviously gay boy I’d ever met or have ever known, atually. She still doesn’t believe it. Why don’t you ask out the So and So Boy. He’s so handsome."
On a long car trip, when I started crying because she gave the dog a 1/2 Gravol to let it sleep for most of the trip, she gave the other half to me. She said it was the best road trip ever.
She will plan her vacations around her hairdresser’s schedule.
She will straight-up murder you for Bridge Mixture.
Happy Birthday Mickey! Sorry for everything. Thanks for everything. Love you!
xoxo

Poor Brian
As many of you know, just this past February, Brian and I got married. Best decision I ever forced upon him. I’ve not had a lot of long term relationships, it’s true. One of the biggest reasons it works between Brian and I is because I was up front with him about the kind of person I was very early on. I can’t emphasize enough to young ladies out there the importance of being who you are with your gentlemen friends, and how he should be comfortable with the real you. I learned this and I found a good man. I told Brian a number of things that were important for him to know if he wanted to be with me:
Even if I say it’s ok you don’t have to buy me a present, you have to buy me a present.

Note Brian's nakedness.
I will talk in a funny voice to ALL animals I see on the street, whether or not the owner wants me to.
I will always talk to wait staff and try to get them to like me. I will joke around, try to make them laugh. Always. I inherited this from my father. It’s partly because they are captive. They pretty much have to be at least civil to me, or they risk not getting a tip, or worse, being complained about to management. Just a FYI, don’t worry, wait staff of the world. I will kiss your ass even if you tell me I stink and am fat. I just want to be friends. Temporary friends, to be sure, but I seek your approval as sure as I sought the approval of every hairless, large eyed boy in elementary school.
In restaurants, I never order what I really wanted will be jealous of your food and will demand French fries. If you have a problem with this, order more French fries. I will not order my own.
If something happens in an elevator full of strangers that needs to be commented on, I will make that comment.
I will always want to know if she is fatter than me. There is only one right answer and it changes depending on my mood.
Only I am allowed to talk trash about my dog.
Because I really want people to like me, even though I know not everyone will, I test people. Even though I want people to like me, I go about making them like me in an awkward way. To see if I can get a foothold in someone’s life I ask them questions very soon after meeting them like "Does your pee smell weird after you eat asparagus" or "I can burp the alphabet. How about you?" That kind of thing. Not so much because I care about their answers, but more to see how they react to the question. If they are amused, then I might have a chance. If they are not amused, then I completely change my approach until I beat them into friendship submission. My friends all have a look of resignation about them.
When I first met Brian a friend who knew me well gave me some sage advice on giving the relationship a good chance. They said "Don’t be such a slut right away". I listened. So I was a real lady. On our first date I made it clear that I was certainly NOT going to have sex with him that night, but if waited a few more dates I would be such a freakish whore he wouldn’t know what hit him. He’s still waiting. Sucker.

Traveling Attire.
I flew in to Newark this week on band business. I was finished early so paid $80 US to get myself on an earlier flight home. Ended up being stuck on the tarmac for 50 minutes because of bad weather in Toronto and only got home 20 minutes sooner than I would have if I’d taken my original flight. Lesson learned
.
I generally do not like traveling. I like staying within a 4 - block radius of home most of the time. And I’m not fond of traveling solo, which I have to do a bit. I like being able to leave my carry on with someone while I pee. Because I have to pee a lot and my carry on is always really heavy. Plus I try to suss out the best seats at the gate that have an electrical outlet next to it so I can charge up my computer which is always about to die. So if I get up to pee, I lose my primo seat to some gross person who is not me.
Airports are a microcosm of fashion archetypes:
The HEY I’M TRAVELING: There’s always someone with a tilly endurable hat and their wallet on a string around their neck. They are dressed ready to go on safari. Even if they are flying from Toronto to Moncton. Their teenaged children bring their bed pillows from home.

The I’M CASUAL, FASHIONABLE AND PROBABLY FAMOUS person. Usually people in media or entertainment. Or stylists.
These people look this cool all the time. This is because, unlike me, they MAKE AN EFFORT. The best example of this is Stuart Cameron of THE HEARTBROKEN, who always looks casually, coolly, put together.
Clean jeans, pressed shirt, hip footwear and sunglasses. The guitar case gets him a lot of positive attention. Traveling with Stuart Cameron is good because he only has to bat his 8 foot long eyelashes at the airline rep and we are whisked in to the Elite Lounge where they have free drinks, chips and massages next to the Zen garden. A Geisha welcomes you and gives you champagne.

I fall into the category of the I WILL PROBABLY SPILL SOMETHING ON MYSELF SO I’LL JUST WEAR SOMETHING THAT RENDERS ME INVISIBLE person. Not sexy. Never get free stuff. Always spill stuff.
Back in the day before 9/11, I used to bring tweezers on the plane because airplane bathroom lighting was perfect for plucking out chin hairs. The combination of the harsh light, the mirror being so close and the air pressure forcing the hair to burst out ever further from my epic pores, made for a conducive plucking environment, indeed. I now look like a bushman. Stupid Al Qaeda.

The BUSINESSMAN; Suits. Leather computer bags. Look of resignation and numbness about them. Oh, and businessmen, your collar should be the same colour as your shirt. Don Cherry should not be your fashion standard. Sometimes they wear polo shirts with their company logo. This is so sad.

The I’M GOIN’ ON VACATION people. Shorts in January. Oversized straw hats. Beer t-shirts. Awful, awful, awful people.
_______________________
The I’M SUPER FREAKIN’ RICH people: I was in the line up at customs and there was this couple, maybe in their 70’s dressed to the nines. Unreal
She was wearing a blue and white tweedy Chanel suit with a Louis Vitton bag and had probably a couple million dollars worth of diamonds on her without exaggeration. One of her diamond rings was an emerald cut the size of the end of my thumb! She was wearing a hat and carrying a Neiman Marcus round hat box. Who carries a hat box? Who buys hats? She was amazing. And her husband was wearing an excellent suit and nice shoes and a scarf like a British yacht owning dandy would have worn in the 60’s.
They ruined my love of them when they made it very clear that they were, completely baffled as to why they should have to wait in the customs line up along with people who were wearing t shirts and not millions of dollars of diamonds. They were completely exasperated. And the line was moving pretty quickly.

Other examples of this are women who dress for travel as if they were going clubbing.

Many have had too much plastic surgery wearing white pants and high-heeled mules.

Should be turned away at the gate. Really.
I mean, what if she had to run for her plane? Or walk somewhere. Or look not like an exotic dancer who kept the look after bagging the millionaire.

At least she's dressed that way for a reason besides being a traveling douche.
Maybe we should all just stay home. Save a tree. Save ourselves from public humiliation. Except for Stuart Cameron. He can go anywhere.
